If you crave a quick fix of snacks you could munch on, Jack in the Box is always to the rescue. Well, at least in most locations. But, the question is why are there only THREE (with emphasis on ‘three’) Jack in the Box locations in Utah?

If you live in Utah or are traveling to the state and crave a cheddar-loaded Jack in the Box cheeseburger, it will be seemingly tough to find one. More so in the northern half of the state.

It may sound seemingly frustrating if you are a traveler but if you are a local Utahn, you probably already know that Jack in the Box is not a popular fast-service restaurant (not anymore, atleast) in Utah.

In the course of this article, we shall provide you detailed information on why Utah does not have ‘enough’ Jack in the Box locations, alongside a lot more.

Are there really no Jack in the Box locations in Utah?

That’s untrue. Utah does have Jack in the Box locations in the state. The problem is that there are just not ‘enough’ of Jack in the Box locations in Utah. With only three Jack in the Box outlets across the whole 85,000 square miles of the state, it would not be wrong to consider three of these locations next to none.

All three destinations are in southern Utah, and they are all within 45 minutes of one another by vehicle. Those who want to visit Jack in the Box locations in the northern half of the state will have to go to Nevada or Idaho to get their fix.

Why doesn’t Utah have enough Jack in the Box locations?

The reason why Utah has only three Jack in the Box locations all across the state (which is close to none) is the controversies around the fast-food chain that almost drove it to extinction.

Owing to two scandals, with about a decade interval in between, Jack in the Box lost its customer base in Utah and that led to the decreasing number of locations in the state. Below we have elucidated about the two controversies in detail:

Mislabeled Meat Controversy

The scandal that occurred in 1981 is about how the Foodmaker plant, the Jack in the Box meat supplier for taco and hamburger meat contained a shipment that had horse meat in it. Food inspectors identified kangaroo meat in other shipments bound for the United States, including those initially shipped from Profreeze in Australia.

The meat controversy with Jack in the box is one of the most famous food scandals in history. It was a huge issue that caused many people to boycott their favorite fast-food chain for years and it even led to lawsuits.

A food scandal is when there’s something wrong with your food, such as an ingredient being added or removed from the product. This can be anything from a chemical used in the production process to a health concern like salmonella poisoning.

In this case, the meat scandal happened because Jack in the Box was apparently using horse meat instead of beef in its burgers.

This was first discovered by a consumer who noticed that his burger tasted different than usual. He then contacted the company and they confirmed that they were using horse meat in some of their products.

It turns out that Jack in the Box had been using horse meat for quite a while. According to the New York Times, the company started using the cheaper alternative after the price of beef increased during the recession.

However, the company didn’t make any effort to hide the fact that they were using horsemeat. Instead, they just claimed that they weren’t aware of what kind of meat they were actually buying.

According to theNew York Post, Jack in the Box was using up to 70 percent horse meat in some of its burgers. However, the exact amount wasn’t known.

After the scandal broke, Jack in the Box released a statement saying that they didn’t use any such horse meat or other meat.

Although the spokesman had already given a lucid (on their behalf) explanation to the mishap, the larger segment of their consumer base believed that Jack in the Box had knowingly purchased kangaroo and horse meat. There was a strong reason to have the belief since kangaroo and horse meat was much cheaper and was ‘allegedly’ being used by the franchise to lower their cost of operation.

E.Coli or Food Poisoning Outbreak

It was in 1983 that marked the final crippling of Jack in the Box’s business in Utah. The company had started earning the trust of their customer back again after the mislabeled meat package scandal.

The outbreak began in May when one person became ill after eating at a Jack-In-the-Box restaurant in San Diego County. Since then, more than 100 people have become sick with symptoms including bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps, and vomiting.

Officials said they believe that the source of the contamination was beef supplied by a local slaughterhouse. They also suspect that the meat may have come from a different plant because it had not been inspected for E. coli before being shipped to the restaurant.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture(USDA) was investigating whether the meat came from a federally inspected plant. If so, the agency could have suspended its inspection program.

The USDA said it would inspect all plants that process raw ground beef within 24 hours of receiving notification of the investigation.

“If we find any violations, we will take immediate action,” said the chief veterinarian for the USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service. “We are committed to protecting consumers.”

The outbreak underscores the importance of following proper food safety procedures.

Jack in the Box’s reputation was severely tarnished by this incident. This also caused competitors and parallels to suffer a loss owing to the customer’s skepticism. Till date, the Beehive State has proven to be a difficult market for these three enterprises to break into.

A number of cases were filed against the business, all of which were quickly resolved in favor of the company (but left the chain nearly bankrupt and losing customers). At the time, Washington state law mandated that hamburgers be cooked to an internal temperature of at least 155 degrees Fahrenheit (68 degrees Celsius).

This was the temperature necessary to kill E. coli bacteria, despite the fact that the FDA’s requirement at the time was only 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius), the temperature at which Jack in the Box cooked its hamburgers. Not following the mandate caused Jack in the Box to be in a huge corporate crisis.

After the event:

Working with manufacturing businesses, Jack in the Box developed a food safety programme that tested for bacteria in all of its food products. Following the event, Jack in the Box demanded that all of their hamburgers be cooked to at least 155 degrees Fahrenheit (68 degrees Celsius) in all of their stores countrywide.
